"ASIA/IRAN - President Rohani: Iran and the Holy See together in the fight against extremism
Tehran - Iranian President Hassan Rohani relaunches dialogue between the Islamic and the Christian world, and hopes for an alliance between Iran and the Holy See regarding the major issues that shake humanity such as the fight against radicalism, injustice and poverty. As Fides learns, Rohani’s appeal was launched on the occasion of his meeting with His Exc. Mgr. Leo Boccardi, new Apostolic Nuncio in Iran. Rohani published a photo of the meeting on his social network account "Twitter", writing that "Islam and Christianity need to dialogue more than ever today, as the basis of conflicts between religions is mainly ignorance and the lack of mutual understanding". Rohani remarked that, according to the doctrine of their respective faiths, the Vatican and Iran have "common enemies" such as terrorism and extremism, and "similar goals", how to defeat injustice and poverty in the world. The Iranian President thanked Pope Francis for the good wishes sent to the Iranian people, hoping that "the two countries can work together to stop violence and radicalism in the world".
The new Apostolic Nuncio in Iran, Archbishop Leo Boccardi, called for "closer bilateral relations between the Holy See and the Islamic Republic", expressing the wish that the two countries can work together to resolve regional crises in the Middle East, particularly the current one in Syria. The Iranian foreign minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif, said that, given the strong presence of extremist groups, "the condition of religious minorities in Syria, such as Christians, are a cause of concern for us".
"Iran's Rouhani to visit Vatican in January

Vatican City: Iranian President Hassan Rouhani (pictured) will make his first visit to the Vatican and meet Pope Francis in the second half of January, a spokesman for the tiny city state said Tuesday.
While no date has been set, the visit is likely to take place towards the end of the month, spokesman Ciro Benedettini told journalists.
Rouhani, a self-declared moderate who was elected in 2013, had been scheduled to visit the Vatican in November as part of a tour which would have taken him to Italy and France. But the trip was cancelled following the Paris attacks.
The previous official visit by an Iranian president to the Vatican was in 1999 when Mohammad Khatami met John Paul II, followed by another visit in 2005 when he attended the Polish pope's funeral.
While it is forbidden to convert to Christianity in Iran, the country's small minority of Eastern Catholics enjoy greater religious freedom than in many Sunni Gulf states.

"Iran's military budget is going to get a huge boost from the nuclear deal
DeleteSaeed Ghasseminejad, Contributor
Oct. 30, 2015, 10:55 AM 1,824 2
Post-nuclear deal Iran has shown the will to spend more on its military adventures in the Middle East and beyond, even though the price of oil has stayed low.
The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) signed between Iran and a US-led group of six world powers ends the country’s economic isolation. It also provides Iran with $150 billion in short-term sanctions relief at a time when it is involved in a multi-front war in the Middle East.
Tehran has doubled down its support for Assad, and has vowed to increase funding for its proxies. The lifting of arms-related sanctions under the JCPOA will enable Iran to upgrade its arsenal: the country will receive the much-desired S-300 air defense system from Russia, and can renew its obsolete air force. Dan Froomkin
Sep. 24 2015, 8:23 p.m.
He was speaking about his determination “to minimize and, in the long term, to end the many armed conflicts throughout our world,” when he said this:
Here we have to ask ourselves: Why are deadly weapons being sold to those who plan to inflict untold suffering on individuals and society? Sadly, the answer, as we all know, is simply for money: money that is drenched in blood, often innocent blood. In the face of this shameful and culpable silence, it is our duty to confront the problem and to stop the arms trade.
Those were fighting words, especially given where he spoke them. The U.S. is by far the largest arms supplier in the world, with domestic manufacturers selling more than $23.7 billion in weapons in 2014 to nearly 100 different countries. During the Obama administration, weapons sales have surged to record levels, in large part due to huge shipments to Gulf States, particularly Saudi Arabia."

''ISIS'' released one frog:

by Andy Castillo on 02/01/2016
DeleteFor security reasons no details of his release have been shared, but it has been confirmed that the Catholic priest is no longer in captivity.
In May, ISIS gunmen reportedly abducted Father Jacques Mourad, head of Mar Elian monastery in al-Qaryatain town, after the extremists seized the nearby ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria. "The priest of the Syriac Catholic Church celebrated mass this morning in Zaydal", a Catholic source told AFP.
Photographs of that meeting, which took place in a conference room in Qaryatayn, were released at the end of August. In recent days, a video was released on jihadist websites which shows a group of Christians in Qaryatayn while they participate in the meeting in which they had to sign a "payment contract" to continue living in their homes, in the territory controlled by the self-proclaimed Islamic Stat.
Up to 230 civilians, including 60 Christians, were reported to have been abducted from the town at the time. ISIS also desecrated the grave of the monastery's patron saint, St. Elian, who was killed by his father, a Roman officer, for refusing to renounce Christianity.
Father Mourad led a monastic community that had been re-established by the Italian Jesuit missionary, Father Paolo Dall'Oglio, who was himself kidnapped in July 2013 and is still missing. Father Jacques and his friends had provided to find the necessary for their survival even by seeking the help of Muslim donors.
....and now it begins Star Jesuit Wars, the Jesuit movie on ISIS Darth Vader and his enemies, Russia the ''empire of Good'', his Vladimir Putin/Harrison Ford plus pope Francis Skywalker.

ReplyDeleteree of ill-founded optimism.
Delete“One commonly held theory, which one can’t prove, is that John XXIII had good relations with [Soviet President] Khrushchev,” says Father Norman Tanner, a Jesuit expert on the Council at Rome’s Pontifical Gregorian University. Certainly, it has been recorded that Khrushchev visited the Pope at the Vatican, and that John XXIII was delighted to receive birthday greetings from the Soviet leader when the Pope turned 80. In response, John XXIII asked Khrushchev to demonstrate the Soviet leader’s sincerity for better relations by improving the plight of Catholics—in particular, allowing the imprisoned head of the Ukrainian Uniate church, Archbishop Jozsef Slipyi, to emigrate, a request Khrushchev granted in 1963.
Paul VI also met several times with Soviet officials. These meetings mostly took place after the Council, however, and the efforts were largely in vain: Soviet concessions to the Vatican proved to be mostly meagre in the years that followed.
the years that followed.
DeleteBut another motive stood behind this push towards détente: that of fostering better ecumenical relations with the Russian Orthodox Church. As part of his desire for greater openness of the Church to other Christians and faiths, John XXIII strongly wanted members of the Russian Orthodox Church—then deeply entrenched with the Kremlin and the KGB—to take part in the Council. The Pope also wanted Catholic bishops from Russia and its satellite states to be allowed to attend the Council sessions. It would be “a kind of quid pro quo,” says Tanner. But to achieve these goals, John XXIII appears to have been prepared to make an extraordinary concession: that the Council refrain from making “hostile declarations” on Russia.
In a 2007 book called The Metz Agreement, veteran French essayist Jean Madiran gathers a number of sourced claims, testifying that a deal was hatched during Soviet-arranged secret talks in 1962. The meeting, Madiran says, took place in Metz, France, between Metropolitan Nikodim, the Russian Orthodox Church’s then-“foreign minister,” and Cardinal Eugène Tisserant, a senior French Vatican official. Metropolitan Nikodim was, according to Moscow archives, a KGB agent.

The survey was carried out by the Jerusalem Post and its sister Hebrew-language publication Ma’ariv Sof Hashavua. It polled a total of 527 Jewish adults on Tuesday, while there was an error margin of 4.3 percent.
The results certainly showed that President Putin has made an impact on the people of Israel during 2015. He received 29 percent of the vote as the respondents were asked to choose their person of the year.

Iran's supreme leader said on Sunday that Saudi Arabia will face "divine revenge" for executing a top Shia cleric whose death sparked protests in which the kingdom's embassy in Tehran was firebombed.
"The unjustly spilled blood of this oppressed martyr will no doubt soon show its effect and divine vengeance will befall Saudi politicians," state TV reported Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as saying. It said he described the execution as a "political error".

Staff writer, Al Arabiya News Saturday, 2 January 2016
Prominent Shiite preacher Nimr al-Nimr and leading al-Qaeda ideologue Faris al-Shuwail were among the 47 men executed on terrorism charges, the Saudi interior ministry said on Saturday.
56-year-old Nimr was a driving force behind the protests that broke out in 2011 in the kingdom’s east.
Full story: Saudi Arabia executes 47 terrorism convicts
He was arrested in 2012 and did not deny the political charges against him.
At the time, the Saudi interior ministry had described him as an “instigator of sedition” during his arrest in the eastern village of Awamiya after being wounded.
In October 2014, Nimr’s death sentence was confirmed after he had been found guilty of seeking "foreign meddling" in the kingdom, among other charges.
Meanwhile, Shuwail had been described by Saudi media outlets as the top al-Qaeda ideologue. He is believed to have been conducting research in support of the organization and its operations.
He was arrested in August 2004 during a massive crackdown on the group following a series of deadly attacks.
Shuwail’s role as an al-Qaeda ideologue was seen in his writings, in which he attempted to justify the strategies and tactics employed by the militants.
Most of the 47 men executed were involved in a series of attacks carried out by al-Qaeda from 2003-06 that killed Saudis and foreigners in the kingdom, the interior ministry said.
45 of those executed were of Saudi nationality, alongside one Chadian and one Egyptian, according to a list of names and nationalities published by the Saudi Press Agency. The 47 men were based across 12 regions in the kingdom, the interior ministry statement added.
They were convicted of plotting and carrying out terrorist attacks targeting civilians and security forces in Saudi Arabia and neighboring countries.
Saudi Arabia in 2015 suffered a series of further bombing and shooting attacks by militants sympathetic to ISIS. Those attacks killed dozens, increasing pressure on Riyadh to show it was taking strong action.

(Vatican Radio) The Holy See has welcomed Iran’s efforts to reduce or convert its nuclear facilities to peaceful purposes in return for the lifting of economic sanctions. In a statement delivered to the 59th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna on Monday, the Holy See’s Secretary for Relations with States, Archbishop Paul Gallagher, said the Vatican “values positively” Iran’s recent agreement with the European Union and the so-called ‘P5 plus 1’ group of nations because “it considers that the way to resolve disputes and difficulties should always be that of dialogue and negotiation”.
Listen to Philippa Hitchen's report:

The Vatican’s foreign minister spoke of the IAEA’s important role in promoting sustainable and integral human development, using nuclear technologies for improving agriculture, pollution control, water management, nutrition and food safety, and infectious disease control. But he also insisted that “spending on nuclear weapons squanders the wealth of nations”, adding that “the dubious strategic rationales for maintaining and even strengthening” nations’ nuclear arsenals are “morally problematic”.Billions are wasted each year to develop and maintain stocks that will supposedly never be used, Archbishop Gallagher said, adding “How are these expenditures consistent with progress towards nuclear disarmament?”
DeleteArchbishop Gallagher said that while the Holy See has “no illusions about the challenges involved in achieving a world free of nuclear weapons”, nuclear powers must take more “concerted steps” to break the political deadlock over disarmament, in particular by facilitating the entry into force of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT)
The Archbishop called for the “logic of fear and mistrust” to be replaced by a new global ethic of responsibility, solidarity and cooperative security to ensure that nuclear technology is only used for peaceful purposes “and is no longer a sword of Damocles hanging over the earth”.

The vote of confidence comes just before the pope heads to Washington.

Jessica Schulberg
Foreign Affairs Reporter, The Huffington Post
WASHINGTON -- The Vatican endorsed the Iran nuclear accord Monday as a positive step towards its broader goal of a world free of nuclear weapons.
“We hope that the full implementation of [the nuclear deal] will ensure the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear programme under the [Non-Proliferation Treaty] and will be a definitive step toward greater stability and security in the region,” Archbishop Paul Gallagher, the Vatican's foreign minister, said in a statement delivered at the International Atomic Energy Association in Vienna.
“The way to resolve disputes and difficulties should always be that of dialogue and negotiation,” he said, a possible allusion to opponents of the nuclear agreement who have called for military strikes to destroy Iran’s nuclear sites.
Pope Francis’ vote of confidence for the Iran nuclear deal comes the week before he is scheduled to visit Washington, where he will address a joint session of Congress at the invitation of House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio).
