TEHRAN -- Iranian Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance Ali Jannati arrived in Rome on Thursday to visit a number of Italian and Vatican officials.
In the first part of the trip, Jannati and his aides met Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi, the president of the Vatican’s Pontifical Council for Culture and president of the Pontifical Commission for Sacred Archeology, the Persian service of IRNA reported on Friday.
Exchanging experts and movies on religious themes, conducting mutual research projects on rare manuscripts, and the expansion of interreligious relations between Iran and Vatican were among the topics that were discussed during the meeting.
The Iranian delegation also thanked Pope Francis for his strong stance against violence and war in the world.

A
British man has been identified as the knife-wielding militant who
appears in Islamic State videos claiming responsibility for the
beheadings of US, British and other hostages.
The
Guardian has confirmed that Mohammad Emwazi, a 26-year-old west Londoner
and university graduate, is the militant. He had been given the moniker
“Jihadi John” by a group of his hostages, who described him as part of
an Isis cell they named “the Beatles”.
The name was
first published by the Washington Post on Thursday morning. Strenuous
efforts appear to have been made to cover his tracks on the internet.
Emwazi
guarded western hostages and handled negotiations with their families.
By all accounts he is a ruthless killer who has shown little compunction
about his gory, on-screen murders.
Emwazi arrived in
Britain as a young boy, aged six, after being born in Kuwait. He grew up
in west London and was known as a polite, mild-mannered young man.....".
Satanism

European intelligence agencies have visited Damascus to re-engage with the Assad regime and seek co-operation in combating jihadists, according to new reports.
The efforts were led by a retired MI6 officer, according to one report, though this was denied by western sources operating in the region.
Intelligence
operatives are said to have met President Bashar al-Assad’s security
adviser, Ali Mamlouk, despite the fact that he is on a European
sanctions blacklist.
Faisal al-Mokdad, the deputy foreign minister, in an interview with the BBC said countries
which had broken off relations with Syria were now looking to return,
and that intelligence officials wanted to hold talks on fighting the
jihadist threat.
Asked whether Britain was
among the countries involved, he said: “I will not specify but many of
them have visited Damascus, yes.” ....".

Footage
has emerged of Islamic State group extremists taking sledgehammers and
pickaxes to ancient Assyrian artifacts at the Mosul Museum in Iraq. In
the video, dated February 2015 and published online by the Islamist
group, militants can be seen knocking over statues dating back to the
Assyrian Empire, which thrived in the region between 2500 B.C. and 605
B.C. Some of the artifacts were 3,000 years old.
The
terrorist group formerly known as either ISIL or ISIS has occupied the
museum since last summer and previously threatened to destroy its
artifacts, which it indicated are inconsistent with Islam. "These ruins
that are behind me, they are idols and statues that people in the past
used to worship instead of Allah," one Islamic State group militant says
in the video. "The Prophet Muhammed took down idols with his bare hands
when he went into Mecca. We were ordered by our prophet to take down
idols and destroy them, and the companions of the prophet did this after
this time, when they conquered countries."
At least
one Mosul source said the Islamic State group began burning the museum's
priceless collection of rare books and manuscripts this month,
according to the Independent. ....".

On
the face of it, there can be few more implacable foes than Bashar
al-Assad and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil). Syria's
ruler is a secular dictator and a follower of the Alawite sect of Islam;
the leaders of Isil, meanwhile, are Sunni zealots on a divine mission
to build an Islamic state.
Logic would suggest that Mr
Assad and Isil are out to destroy one another. But logic works in
curious ways in the Middle East. As he wages a ruthless struggle to hold
power, the evidence suggests that Mr Assad has quietly cooperated with
his supposed enemies and actively helped their rise.
The
thinking behind this apparently perverse strategy is simple. Mr Assad
wants to force his own people and the West to make an unpalatable
choice: either he stays in place, or Syria falls into the hands of
Isil's fanatics. When push comes to shove, Mr Assad thinks that most
Syrians and the Western powers will back him over the fundamentalists.
But
this plan will only work if Isil is the most powerful rebel force. The
signs are that Mr Assad has done his best to make this come true.
As
recently as 2012, Isil was a marginalised movement confined to a small
area of Iraq. Then Mr Assad emptied Sednaya jail near Damascus of some
of its most dangerous jihadist prisoners. If he hoped that these men
would join Isil and strengthen its leadership, then that aspiration was
certainly fulfilled. A number of figures in the movement's hierarchy are
believed to be former inmates of Syrian prisons, carefully released by
the regime.
By 2013, Isil had managed to capture oilfields in
eastern Syria. But to profit from these assets, they needed to find a
customer for the oil. Mr Assad's regime stepped in and began buying oil
from Isil, thereby helping to fund the movement, according to Western
and Middle Eastern governments.
Having provided Isil
with talented commanders, courtesy of his prison amnesties, and filled
its coffers with oil money, Mr Assad then chose to focus his military
campaign on the non-Islamist rebels. Every town and suburb held by the
Free Syrian Army was relentlessly pounded from the air and ground. A
year ago, the regime even used poison gas against insurgent strongholds
in Damascus.
But Isil enjoyed a curious degree of immunity from
these onslaughts. Until the last few weeks, Syria's air force had
scarcely bothered to bomb the town of Raqqa, which serves as the
unofficial capital of Isil.
"The regime was very happy
to see Isil rise and it has helped their narrative that they face an
extremist al-Qaeda type enemy against which all force is justified,"
said Chris Doyle, the director of the Council for Arab-British
Understanding. "The evidence stacks up that they were definitely
encouraging this sort of movement."
The signs are that
Isil has returned the favour. Instead of trying to bring down Mr Assad,
Isil has concentrated on fighting the non-Islamist rebels. When the
movement reached what may prove to be the apex of its military strength
earlier this year, Isil did not advance on Damascus and try to overthrow
the regime. Instead, it chose to invade northern Iraq and trigger the
current crisis.
Like many Middle Eastern dictators
before him, Mr Assad hopes that the West will accept him as the only
available bulwark against the very fanatics who he has helped and
protected. Put bluntly, he wants to be an arsonist and a fireman at the
same time. The question is whether he will get away with this
time-honoured ploy.

President Vladimir Putin privately threatened to invade Poland, Romania and the Baltic states, according to a record of a conversation with his Ukrainian counterpart.
"If
I wanted, in two days I could have Russian troops not only in Kiev, but
also in Riga, Vilnius, Tallinn, Warsaw and Bucharest," Mr Putin
allegedly told President Petro Poroshenko of Ukraine, reported Süddeutsche Zeitung, a German newspaper.
If
true, this would be the first time that Mr Putin has threatened to
invade Nato or EU members. Any threat to send Russian troops into the
capitals of Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Poland and Romania would cause
grave alarm among Western leaders.
If Mr Putin were to act on
this, Britain could find itself at war with Russia. All five countries
mentioned in this alleged conversation are members of both the EU and
Nato. They are covered by the security guarantee in Article V of Nato's
founding treaty, which states that "an attack on one is an attack on
all". In a speech in Tallinn earlier this month, President Barack Obama
confirmed Nato's commitment to this doctrine.
Mr
Putin's alleged threat bears similarities to remarks he made to Jose
Manuel Barroso, the president of the European Commission, in which he
warned: "If I want to, I can take Kiev in two weeks".
Süddeutsche
Zeitung claims to have seen a European Union memorandum of a meeting
between Mr Barroso and Mr Poroshenko in Kiev last week, during which the
latter is said to have described Mr Putin's threat.
The Russian
president made these remarks in series of telephone conversations with
Mr Poroshenko over the current ceasefire in eastern Ukraine.
Mr
Putin also warned Mr Poroshenko not to put too much faith in the EU,
saying that Russia could exert its influence and bring about a "blocking
minority" among member states.
On Tuesday, Ukraine ratified a
historic Association Agreement with the EU, placing the country on the
path towards eventual EU membership. It was the refusal of the former
president, Viktor Yanukovych, to sign this agreement last year that
triggered the Ukraine crisis.
The EU recently announced further
sanctions against Russia, focusing on the energy, financial and arms
sectors. But there have been divisions among member states over
sanctions, with many worried about the impact on their own economies.
The
Baltic states are particularly nervous about Russian intentions, and Mr
Obama sought to reassure them with his speech in Tallinn earlier this
month.
"If you ever ask again 'Who will come to help?' you'll
know the answer: the Nato alliance, including the armed forces of the
United States of America," he said. "We'll be here for Estonia. We will
be here for Latvia. We will be here for Lithuania."
Mr Poroshenko
is the only alleged source for Mr Putin's latest threat, and there will
be concerns he might be motivated to exaggerate in order to strengthen
EU and Nato support for Ukraine.
The European Commission refused
to confirm or deny whether Mr Barroso had held such a conversation with
Mr Poroshenko. "We will not conduct diplomacy in the press or discuss
extracts of confidential conversations," said Pia Ahrenkilde Hansen, the
Commission spokesperson. "What matters to the EU and the Commission is
to contribute to lasting peace, stability and prosperity in Ukraine."
