Christus, the founder of that name, was put to death as a criminal by Pontius Pilate, procurator of Judea, in the reign of Tiberius, but the pernicious superstition - repressed for a time, broke out yet again, not only through Judea, - where the mischief originated, but through the city of Rome also, whither all things horrible and disgraceful flow from all quarters, as to a common receptacle, and where they are encouraged. Accordingly first those were arrested who confessed they were Christians; next on their information, a vast multitude were convicted, not so much on the charge of burning the city, as of "hating the human race.".....".

Later, in the arena, he was asked by the governor to swear an oath by the ‘luck of Caesar’. Rome celebrates 2000th anniversary of the Emperor Augustus

(ANSAmed) - ROME - The Italian capital on Tuesday [= 19 August 2014] marks the 2,000th anniversary of the death of Augustus, who founded and ruled the ancient Roman empire for 41 years [the same number of years from 1773 to 1814]  from 27 BC until his death in 14 AD. The city has scheduled a number of events to celebrate the great statesman, military commander, diplomat and reformer whose reign ushered in an era of relative peace known as the Pax Romana (The Roman Peace), during which the Roman world was largely free from large-scale conflict for more than two centuries. Among his many monuments in Rome is the Ara Pacis Augustae (Latin for Altar of Augustan Peace, commonly shortened to Ara Pacis), commissioned by the Roman Senate in 13 BC and dedicated to the Roman goddess of Peace in honor of Augustus' return to Rome after a three-year military campaign in Spain and France.

On Tuesday, the Ara Pacis, which is now housed under a glass structure designed by American architect Richard Meier, will remain open to the public until midnight. From 9pm until closing, its beautiful two-tiered friezes portraying Roman gods, goddesses and politicians will be lit up by a digitally projected light show. The Ara Pacis is connected to a museum of the same name, where a show called The Art of Command. The Heritage of Augustus is on view through September 7, its 12 sections illustrating how great leaders in history such as Charlemagne, Frederick II, Charles V or Napoleon reinterpreted Augustus' legacy, sometimes imitating him outright. Near the Ara Pacis is the Mausoleum of Augustus, which is perhaps the most famous of the great emperor's monuments.

Begun in 23 AD upon the emperor's return from a military campaign in Egypt, the mausoleum ended up housing many of Augustus' relatives. The monument is off limits pending restoration, however it will be open Tuesday morning from 9.30-11.30am for guided tours.

Next month on the Palatine Hill, where Augustus made his home and which became the seat of imperial power during his reign, the Palatine Museum will unveil a restored ground floor with a new annex, as well as an upper floor outfitted with new multimedia equipment and a movie on the life of Augustus and his reign.

In the House of Augustus, all of the rooms that have been excavated thus far will be on display to the public for the first time, as will recently restored elaborate frescoes on the walls of the triclinium, an underground dining area.

Also on the Palatine, the House of Livia, built for Augustus's beloved third wife and trusted adviser Livia Drusilla, has been restored and equipped with an elevator allowing access to the disabled.

Visits are by reservation and open to small groups only, to preserve the site. Reservations can be made beginning on August 25 for the opening date, September 18.(ANSAmed).

Two Tornado Air Force were involved in a plane crash in the skies of the Marches. Some witnesses say they saw the two aircraft touch in flight, one of the two caught fire, and both have fallen to the ground. The Air Force has confirmed that in the plane crash involving two Tornado aircraft that were conducting a training mission in the area. The two Tornado that collided in flight in the skies over Ascoli Piceno came from the base of Ghedi (Brescia) and after flight training would have to return to base. The Air Force has sent a team of experts to the crash site for the first checks....Etc.

        Could  ISIS be defeated after Al Maliki's departure? No. At least not yet. Please, this is a serious reality film, not an episode of X Files. The story board of this reality splatter movie includes that when the "good guys" are gone, the "bad guys" expose themselves. Under the perspective of the common sense only an ignorant person and without any element of diplomacy  would do what Obama is doing, openly defending only the Kurds ("friends") from ISIS, who are the enemies of their enemies (Iran always fought Kurds in her territory along the border with an agreement between Saddam's Iraq and NATO Turkey). But this is just what the Jesuits and their friend Hezbollah want. 

       To tell the truth C.I.A., even if an armed hand of the Jesuits in USA and in the world, this time did her job, carefully informing since years the Obama administration about ISIS and ISIL  threat. Official: Iraq turmoil not an ‘intelligence failure’

The U.S. intelligence community Monday pushed back at reports that the White House was not warned about the growing strength of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) ahead of the group’s recent offensive.

“The job of the Intelligence Community is to warn. We did that," said a U.S. intelligence official. "In short, this was not U.S. intelligence failure. It was an Iraqi military failure.”

Reports suggested that the White House was caught off-guard last week by the Islamic State’s rapid advance on Erbil, a city in northern Iraq where the U.S. has a consulate and joint operations center

After Kurdish Peshmerga forces found themselves outgunned, President Obama ordered U.S. airstrikes there and humanitarian drops to stranded Iraqi refugees.

Obama said on Saturday that ISIS's "movement over the last several months has been more rapid than the intelligence estimates."

U.S. officials told The Wall Street Journal in a report published Monday that American intelligence agencies "often have underestimated the group's ability to make rapid operational gains."

An intelligence official, though, pushed back against that characterization, saying that analysts have been closely tracking ISIS and its predecessor, al Qaeda in Iraq, for years.

"Throughout the past year, the Intelligence Community has repeatedly warned that ISIL was on the march, gaining strength and picking up growing Sunni support, while the Iraqi Security Forces looked vulnerable," the official said, using ISIS's alternative name, the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant.

Although their reports are classified to the public, intelligence agencies’ assessments are shared with the White House and members of Congress.

The official said intelligence analysts have even tracked how ISIS exploited political divisions in Iraq’s Sunni community, helping the group in June take over Iraq’s second largest city, Sunni-dominant Mosul.
"Among other things, analysts reported on how ISIL has exploited Sunni political discord, uneven Iraqi counter-terrorism pressure, and the Syrian conflict to strengthen its operational capacity and intensify the threat to the Iraqi Government,” the official said. “Further, they reported on ISIL’s efforts to spark uprisings in areas with substantial Sunni populations.”

The official said if there was a surprise, it was in how quickly Iraqi forces fell apart before the shooting started, in light of the Pentagon’s efforts to train and equip Iraqi local security forces for more than a decade.

"The ‘will to fight’ is inherently difficult to assess," said Office of the Director of National Intelligence spokesman Jeffrey Anchukaitis.

"Analysts must make assessments based on perceptions of command and control, leadership abilities, quality of experience and discipline under fire — none of which can be understood with certainty until the first shots are fired," he said.

 Iraq's political class has watched with fear and envy in the last fortnight as American jets have slowed the Islamic State extremist group's advance towards the Kurdish stronghold of Irbil.   At the same time, the group, formerly known as Isis, has been trying to encircle Baghdad – untroubled by air strikes. Its manoeuvres near the national capital in recent days have consolidated gains it has made in the last two tumultuous months and made the very existence of Iraq in its current borders ever more precarious.
With a new central government only three weeks from being sworn in, Iraqi leaders are imploring the US to honour what they perceived to be an implicit deal to protect Baghdad once an inclusive leadership was installed.

As the war of attrition with Isis steadily tips in the militants' favour, resentment is growing among influential Iraqis. "The American policy is shameful," said Hassan al-Fayath, the dean of al-Nahrain University in Baghdad. "The Americans always say they are the leaders in fighting terrorism but they didn't lift a finger when Isis was taking parts of Iraq. The only time the Americans got involved was when they found it started threatening their interests by getting closer to the oil fields and to Irbil.
"Isis succeeded in securing Iraqi oil and now they have the resources to recruit more fighters and buy weapons. Why did everyone let them go that far and not intervene earlier?"

"American intervention is a must. It's the most powerful country and they have the power to defeat Isis. I'm optimistic. I believe that Iraq will be a bridge to build communication between the US and Iran. It's something both parties want to do."
Not all are convinced of the merits of more US jets, though. Saleh al-Obeidi, a spokesman for influential Shia cleric Moqtadr al-Sadr, said: "Moqtadr approves [of] the US involvement in Iraq only if it is within the framework of an international rescue. But he doesn't want a new American footprint in Iraq."

      Uh! Practically never. Can you imagine an international rescue now without the agreement of Putin's Russia, after Barack Obama approved further sanctions against Russia?
